Why this matters

A screenshot is evidence with a timestamp. It settles what a page looked like on a given day, which matters for bug reports, compliance records, design reviews, competitor tracking and disputes about what a price or a claim actually said. Taking one by hand is fine for a single page and impossible for fifty. Capturing programmatically also removes the parts of a manual screenshot that get in the way — your browser chrome, your extensions, your cookie choices, your logged-in state — and gives you the page as an ordinary first-time visitor sees it.

Common mistakes

• Capturing before the page settles. Fonts swap, images load late and animations run on entry; a capture taken too early shows a layout no visitor ever saw.
• Forgetting the cookie banner. On first visit most European sites cover the content with a consent dialog, and that dialog is what ends up in the image.
• Using desktop width for a mobile question. Layout bugs are usually viewport-specific, so a desktop capture cannot answer a mobile complaint.
• Assuming a full-page capture matches the scrolling experience. Lazy-loaded sections and sticky headers behave differently under full-page capture than they do for a person scrolling.
