Why this matters
A certificate does not fail loudly. It works perfectly until the day it expires, and then every visitor meets a full-page browser warning instead of your site. The failure is total and it usually happens on a weekend. Checking a certificate takes seconds and tells you three things a browser padlock will not: how many days remain, whether the chain of trust is complete, and whether the certificate actually covers the hostnames people type. Automated renewal has made expiry rarer but not rare — a renewal job that quietly stopped working looks exactly like one that is running fine, right up until it doesn't.
Common mistakes
- Trusting the padlock icon. A padlock means the connection is encrypted right now; it says nothing about expiry next week or whether www is covered.
- Checking the bare domain only. Certificates frequently cover example.com but not www.example.com, and visitors reaching the uncovered form get a name-mismatch warning.
- Assuming automated renewal is healthy because it worked last time. Renewal jobs fail silently after server moves, permission changes, and port-80 firewall rules.
- Ignoring the intermediate chain. A certificate can be valid while the chain is incomplete — desktop browsers often paper over it, mobile clients frequently do not.

Start NowFrequently Asked Questions
Why is SSL important?
SSL encrypts data between your server and visitors. Google uses HTTPS as a ranking signal, and browsers show warnings for non-HTTPS sites.
What if my SSL is expired?
Renew it immediately through your hosting provider or certificate authority. Expired SSL causes browser warnings and can drop your search rankings.
Does this tool check the full certificate chain?
Yes, it validates the entire certificate chain including intermediate certificates.
