Quick answer

To split a PDF, drop the file into the tool above and choose a mode: Every page saves each page as its own PDF in a ZIP; Custom ranges such as 1-3, 4-6, 9 creates one PDF per range; Extract pages such as 2, 5-7 combines the chosen pages into a single new PDF. Click Split and download the result.

How to use the Split PDF tool

  1. 1

    Open your PDF

Drag a PDF onto the tool or tap to choose one. Encrypted PDFs are not supported, so remove any password first.

  2. 2

    Choose a split mode

Select Every page, Custom ranges or Extract pages, depending on whether you want many single-page files, several chunks or one shorter document.

  3. 3

    Enter the pages

For Custom ranges or Extract pages, type page numbers and ranges separated by commas, for example 1-3, 4-6, 9.

  4. 4

    Split and download

Click Split. Multiple output files arrive as a ZIP; a single extracted PDF downloads directly.

The three ways to split a PDF, with examples

Every page turns each page into its own one-page PDF. A 12-page document becomes 12 files, delivered together in a ZIP. This suits scanned stacks of separate letters or invoices that were scanned in one go, where every page is really its own document.

Custom ranges cuts the PDF into chunks you define, one output file per range. Entering 1-3, 4-6, 9 produces three PDFs: pages 1 to 3, pages 4 to 6, and page 9 on its own. Use it to separate the chapters of a report, split a combined scan of several multi-page contracts, or break a large file into parts small enough to email.

Extract pages does the opposite of splitting into many files: the pages you list are combined into one new PDF. Entering 2, 5-7 gives a four-page document containing pages 2, 5, 6 and 7. It is the quickest way to send someone only the relevant pages, or to drop pages you do not need by extracting everything else.

Writing page ranges correctly

Page numbers start at 1 and refer to the physical order of pages in the file, not to any numbers printed on the pages themselves. A document with a cover and a roman-numbered preface might show page 1 on what is actually the fifth page of the PDF, so check the page count in your viewer.

Use a hyphen for a continuous run (4-9) and commas to separate items (1, 3, 7-8). In Custom ranges mode each comma-separated item becomes its own file, so 1, 2, 3 gives three single-page PDFs while 1-3 gives one three-page PDF. In Extract pages mode all items end up together in one file.

Lossless splitting that stays on your device

Splitting with pdf-lib copies the original page objects into new documents. Nothing is rasterised, so text remains selectable, vector graphics stay sharp and the pages look exactly as they did before. The only thing that changes is which file each page lives in.

Because the work happens in your browser, the document is never uploaded. That is worth knowing when the PDF is a full employee file, a scanned stack of identity documents or a set of medical records and you only need to share one part of it. You keep the whole file to yourself and send only the extracted pages.

Tips for the best results

  • Check the total page count in a PDF viewer before typing ranges; numbering starts at 1.
  • To remove a few pages, use Extract pages and list every page you want to keep.
  • Splitting a large scan into ranges is a simple way to get files under an email attachment limit.
  • If some pages are sideways, fix them with Rotate PDF before or after splitting.
  • To reassemble pages in a new order, split first and then combine the parts with Merge PDF.

Frequently asked questions

How do I split a PDF into separate pages?

Drop the PDF into the tool, choose the Every page mode and click Split. Each page is saved as its own PDF, and all of them are downloaded together in a ZIP file. The original document is not changed, and nothing is uploaded.

How do I extract specific pages from a PDF?

Choose Extract pages and type the pages you want, such as 2, 5-7. Those pages are combined into one new PDF that you can download. Everything else is left out.

How do I remove pages from a PDF?

Use Extract pages and enter every page you want to keep. For a 10-page file where you want to drop page 4, type 1-3, 5-10. The new PDF contains all pages except page 4, and your original file stays untouched. There is also a dedicated Delete PDF Pages tool where you simply type the pages to remove.

Can I split a PDF into several parts at once?

Yes. Pick Custom ranges and enter each part separated by commas, for example 1-3, 4-6, 9. That produces three PDFs: pages 1 to 3, pages 4 to 6, and page 9. When there is more than one output file, they download as a ZIP.

Does splitting a PDF reduce its quality?

No. Pages are copied as they are, not converted to images, so text stays selectable and graphics stay sharp. The split files look identical to the corresponding pages in the original.

Can I split a password-protected PDF?

No, encrypted PDFs are not supported. Open the document in a PDF reader with its password, save an unprotected copy, and split that copy instead. The tool never tries to crack or bypass PDF passwords.

Private by design. Every Krawly converter runs inside your browser using JavaScript and WebAssembly. Your files are not uploaded, stored or seen by anyone — when you close the tab, they are gone.
